Rick Daliwal: “There was a story in Vancouver that the Canucks don’t have a lot of room on July 1st. It’s really hard to move bad contracts around. Do you think it can still be done?
I know we are not far from the first of July. The (JT) Miller’s, (Brock) Boerser, (Tyler) Myers, and (Conor) Garland. It’s hard to move them. Is there a possibility of that happening? “
Friedman: “I think there’s always an opportunity. You know what Rick is, one of the things you always forget is, first of all, there are always teams that would like to be a moderator, depending on what you’re willing to do. There are some teams that won’t. You’re trying to win next year so you can call them and it depends what they’re willing to do to help you.So that’s number one.
But the other thing is, and you always forget that this is, just look now, for example here in Toronto where the city is burning. Teams that lose in the playoffs, and then start saying, “Okay, what do we want to do here? How does this change the way we’re going to do things?” I think you’ll see that.
I think teams that miss the playoffs and still want to compete. Or teams that are out of the playoffs and want to change their mix, all of a sudden they start looking around and say, “Well, we weren’t here a month ago but now we’re here and what does that mean?”
And I wouldn’t be surprised if the Canucks are going to see some of those teams that just missed the playoffs or some of those teams that are going to make the playoffs or get out earlier than they’d like, it opens up possibilities because their situations change.
So, I always think there’s a willingness for teams to make moves and change their mix, and some of those situations become apparent during and after playoffs that weren’t there before. And I think that will happen. I think there will be teams that will say, “Well, we didn’t have that with this group, what else did we get?” Maybe they like something Vancouver has got.
I think there will be ways here to find the Canucks, they just have to be patient a little bit and see how it goes.”
