Sportsnet: Elliott Friedman and Jeff Marek in 32 Ideas: Podcast – Kyle Penguin?
Marek: “What happened between Dubas and the pens?”
Friedman: “We reported Saturday night that the Penguins were expected to ask for permission to talk to Dubas. As we were recording this, early Sunday evening after Game 2 of the Western Conference Final, I heard they had permission to talk to Dubas. So if you’re going To where, I think we’ll find out pretty quickly.
From what I understand, Pittsburgh was very close to ending their search. I think there was a possibility that we might find the new president of hockey operations in Pittsburgh as early as this week.
I think that was the plan and I think that’s where we’re headed, Jeff. And again, I just want to make sure, I’m not convinced, this could end up being, but I’m not convinced he’s going to be the president of hockey operations and GM for Pittsburgh. I think they’re going to hire “one key hockey person” and kind of fill that in from there.
One of the things I’ve been told is that they may only use the title of Chief of Hockey Operations if they have to promote someone else to GM to get them out of another organization.
Anyway, I think they were getting really close. If you’ve heard all the podcasts, you’ve kind of heard the names we talked about. I think Mathieu Darchy is one person from Tampa that they’ve been taking a good look at. We’ll see where you go.
But now Dubas fell into the middle of all these searches. And I’ll say this, I’ve had people who have been kind tell me that the whole idea of Dubas maybe going to Ottawa at some point, and bringing up this rivalry with Toronto, it’s definitely drawn in some people but I think Pittsburgh is going to make their offer and see if that appeals to Kyle Dubas. And I think that process is underway.”
Marek: “Kyle Dubas talk. Kyle Dubas content was all over the place this weekend, and the conversations were wild. I just want to make sure I throw this in there on the pod, just like I don’t ultimately think it’s going to happen but one conversation I had, Someone was speculating that they could see Dupas talking to Fenway Sports but not about the Pittsburgh Penguins, not baseball.
And it would be a move by Kyle Dubas to deflect everyone and end up working baseball for Fenway Sports and not…
Friedman: “Why not just Liverpool? He’ll talk to Fenway to run Liverpool.”
Marek: “I just put it out there. I just throw stuff out there on this podcast today.”
