sportscent: Pat Steinberg recently looked at the big questions facing Calgary Flames In this off season. Who might be the club’s next general manager after Brad Treleving’s departure and how that might affect manager Daryl Sutter topped his list.
Bystander note: Sutter’s fate will be tied to who becomes the next general manager. This person may prefer to bring their own trainer. However, I think Treliving’s replacement will be stuck with Sutter for at least 2023-24 with his two-year contract extension starting on July 1.
Another disappointing performance next season, however, could mean the end of Sutter’s second tenure behind the Flames bench. I think the ownership of the club would be more comfortable with that scenario rather than firing him now and having to pay him for not coaching their team for two years.
Steinberg also questioned the future of the notable Flames with a year left on their contracts. they include Elias LindholmAnd Michael BacklundAnd Tyler TufoliAnd Noah HanifenAnd Nikita Zadorov and Chris Taniff.
Lindholm and Backlund were not committed about their futures beyond next season. But the other four sounded more positive about staying in Calgary.
Bystander note: The new GM can meet with these players as soon as possible to see if they’re willing to open extension talks after July 1. Those who don’t want to, or at least hesitate to do so, may end up in a trade before the NHL Draft on June 28-29.
Steinberg also wondered if he could play well on the attacking side Jonathan Huberdeau He will be brought in via trade or free agency. After a career-best performance of 115 points with Florida panthers In 2021-22, Huberdeau has just 55 points with the Flames this season.
the athlete: In the recent bit of mailbags, Julian McKenzie suggested that Lindholm would make the best return if the Flames shopped any of these players eligible for UFA status next summer. He believes any trade Lindholm is involved in should bring a first-round pick and a top-six forward or a top-four outfielder.
Backlund may get the Flames at best on a second round and prospect. He wonders if the high cost of re-signing Hanifen might force them to trade him regardless of whether he wants to return.
Spectator’s note: This letter of Huberdeau can probably be found using Lindholm or Hanifin as commercial bait.
Will Roslovic fit in well with the Bannock?
Governorate: Ben Kuzma pondered whether Jack Roslovic will fit in with Vancouver Canucks as the center of the third line. The Blue Jackets’ depth in promising youth centers as well as the big contracts they pay Johnny Goudreau And Patrick Lane That could make the 26-year-old Roslovic expendable.
Kuzma noted that the Canucks’ previous management had an interest in Roslovic during his tenure with the Canucks Winnipeg Jets. He now has a year left on his contract with a cap of $4 million. This is costly for a player who has struggled to reach 44 points in 77 games this season.
The Blue Jackets have an abundance of wingers, so this isn’t a commercial option for the Canucks. Kuzma believes the Canucks will need the jackets to keep Roslović’s $1 million salary. He’s suggesting that offering a draft pick (the Canucks have had two third-rounders and three fourth-rounders in this year’s draft) might get it done.
Bystander note: It could cost two draft picks depending on how keen the Canucks are on getting Roslovic. However, we don’t know at this point if they are interested in the Jackets position given him Inconsistent play and defensive errors.
