The New Jersey Devils made a big deal, acquiring Tyler Toffoli from the Calgary Flames in exchange for Yegor Sharangovich and a 2023 Round Draft Pick. The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Tom Fitzgerald, and it may be among the first of a few Flames players transferred by GM Craig Conroy.
Toffoli, 31, is coming off a stellar season with Calgary, scoring a career-high 73 points (34 goals, 39 assists). Most notably, he set new personal bests in goals, assists, and power play goals (10) and will bring size and scoring ability to the Devils’ lineup.
The striker has one year remaining on his current contract, which he signed with the Montreal Canadiens. The deal carries a cap of $4,250,000, with $3,500,000 in cash due for the 2023-24 season.
In return, the Flames receive Yegor Sharangovich and a 2023 third round draft pick. Sharangovich, a fifth-round pick by the Devils in the 2018 NHL Draft, has shown promise during his time with New Jersey. In 205 games played over three seasons, he tallied 106 points (53 goals, 53 assists) and contributed to the team’s offensive production. While the Devils are parting ways with Sharanjović, they are gaining an established goalscorer in Tofoli.
The Devils are looking to take it a step further this season
It was the second significant trade of the day for the Devils who had earlier received a sixth round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft from San Jose in exchange for goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood. Professions show the devils commitment to improving their roster and meeting their needs. By acquiring Toffoli, they are enhancing their offensive capabilities and adding a player with a great scoring record. On the other hand, the Flames are acquiring young talent in Sharanjović and a draft pick that provides future value.
