PGA Tour professional Michael Kim has been making a name for himself on and off the course in recent months.
On the track, the 29-year-old has racked up two top-10 finishes since March, including a seventh-place finish at Wells Fargo last week, which put him on track for his best-earning season yet.
Off the track, Kim has gained fans with his candid assessment of touring life. On social media, he weighed in on everything from how to fix slow play to what it’s like pairing up with John Ram.
On Monday, Kim raised eyebrows with a tweet describing a “mystery player or trolley caddy” who left AimPoint measurements at AT&T Byron Nelson’s green drills.
“There was a mysterious player or toolbox that was writing 1% 2% 3% on the target’s green drill…” Kim wrote. “But they’re all about 0.5% off, which is a big problem if you’re trying to get used to before a championship round. IS IT A PURPOSE SABOTAGE??? #DISPUTE.”
If you’re not familiar with how AimPoint’s method of reading the green works, here’s the gist of it: A player walks the ball’s path to the hole as a means of reading the amount of a break on a given putt. Once the player’s feet are in position, the player estimates how much slope they feel on a scale of 1 to 5. The next step is to close one eye, and bring up the number of fingers slope on whichever side of the hole the fracture is. Finally, you head to your ball and aim your shot at the outside finger, say, “AimPoint.”
If the markings on Byron Nelson’s practice green are indeed inaccurate, they could theoretically confuse players or caddies who don’t do their homework.
Given Kim’s use of capital letters and the hashtag on “controversy,” it’s unclear whether or not his post was joking, but one thing’s for sure: If you’re playing AT&T Byron Nelson this week, you better take your AimPoint measurements!
