When I decided to demo new gear from Malbon Golf, I’ll be honest their golf balls weren’t the thing I was most looking forward to checking out.
They weren’t in the top five products I was excited about, in fact, having received a couple polos, a pullover, putter cover, sweet new shoes (which you can check out in the header image and shot by Troy, below) and other golf goodies.
Not anymore. Not after last month’s late-February round.
With incredibly un-winter-like 70-degree weather predicted for the day, there was no chance I was going to miss out on playing golf. So we got a tee time set up at Geneva National Resort & Club down in Lake Geneva.
Winter Golf at Geneva National
Destination GN had opened the Trevino course several days before, and made tee times available for the Gary Player course that day (the Palmer course is healing after off-season renovations to multiple greens and tee boxes by former Arnold Palmer Design Company associate Brandon Johnson).
Paired with Paloma Resorts COO & Geneva National General Manager Glen Murray, his best friend and professional golfer Brad Lanning and the all-around golf media star Gary D’Amato of Wisconsin.Golf, we were in for a great day and a rare off-season treat.
I had never played with Brad before, but knew of him as Glen’s buddy and one heck of a player. Brad was honored to hit the opening tee shot at the 2023 US Senior Open at SentryWorld, in fact – something I’d included in a recent article on the event and SentryWorld Superintendent Matt Smith for Grass Roots Magazine:
Check out my article on the US Senior Open and Matt Smith below…
“SentryWorld, Matt Smith Shine at the US Senior Open”
My article for Grass Roots Magazine on SentryWorld and their world-class Superintendent Matt Smith, chronicling their path leading up to and executing on the wildly successful 2023 US Senior Open.
Brad’s a pro and Glen’s a scratch player who successfully marked off Golf Digest’s Top 100 Courses in America before his 40th birthday. I didn’t expect to be hitting last often.
I used the new Malbon Tour M golf balls, though, and man did they perform!
It was February, so I didn’t expect to play well. That was certainly the case for the first four or five holes. I had some miss-hits, miss-reads and overall terrible putts that led to a bunch of double bogeys to start. Then it came together…
Malbon Tour M Golf Balls
Driving the ball has never been my strength, and I hit it pretty straight all day. And long. I actually outdrove the group four times, which was almost incomprehensible considering the caliber of players in our group.
Playing the tips, I even had 95 yards in on my approach to 18. Admittedly, it may have hit a cart path but no one saw it.
My point? The only thing different from my last bunch of rounds was the gear, including these balls. The new Malbon Tour M golf ball felt awesome off the clubface, performed well around the greens and flew remarkably far with a soft feel. I’m a fan!
A three-piece ball with urethane construction, the Tour M has a rubber mantle for consistent spin control around the green, a highly elastic rubber core with mid-to-high compression and has been developed for players with swing speeds over 95 mph. I’m typically in the 104-110 mph range, so that’s perfect for me.
After 18 months of development, I’d say Malbon Golf has hit this one out of the park. Or should I say into the approach zone? Either way, I love them and look forward to many more rounds with these new golf balls this season.
Are you looking to shake things up a little this year and try something new? Give Tour M a shot. If you’re like me, you’ll be unexpectedly shocked at how well they perform!
