What does Trevino look like to me?
Good question. We know about the legend. his background. Wins. Majors. making a fire. wisdom. the words. Lord of the words. Just this week, at A new breed of golf On Sirius XM, over just 20 minutes into the show, Trevino had some ideas. For example, during a conversation about slow-paced play, this was Trevino on AimPoint, the newer approach where players cross the line to read pitches:
“I can’t really tell you on the radio what my thoughts are [are]Trevino said. “This is a young thing. An old man can’t do it because he can’t see his feet.
After a few minutes on the show, this Trevino was on the 60-degree wedge.
“But a 60-degree wedge is the worst thing that ever happened to a high-speed user, because he can’t use a 56 yet,” he said on the show. “I mean, he has to learn to use the 56 before he gets to 60. I don’t know why they’re carrying the 60. They can’t use the damn thing. They always lack it.”
“The reason they fall short is, if you play an amateur who has an eight or more, if he gets 60 out of 60, he’s generally short; he’s always short. The reason is that they don’t realize how much loft is in that thing and they tend To swing it as fast as it swings a 56. And it’s not going anywhere. I mean, it’s not going anywhere. Lies tight, and all of a sudden, now they’re getting these little things – built the way the architecture is with fall greens and everything “That’s the worst club you want to use out there is the 60 because the grain is against you. And that club is sharper. You don’t bounce on it so much. The secret is to open the 56 wide to get a little more bounce and then rotate it; close the toe a little bit.”
And on and on. He could flip a phrase, and his stories could fill a library. Which brings us back to the question above: What is it like being Lee Trevino? You have to think that a personal query would get a creative answer, like most of the other things he said.
And that was a lot when it appeared this week in Scoops with Danny Mac Displays. Here is the full exchange kicked off by host Dan McLaughlin:
“What does it mean to be Le Trevino?” Asked. “Because when people talk about the great characters in sports, you’re one of the great characters, not just in golf, but legendary in all walks of life. So when you’re walking down the street, you’re in an airport, whatever the case, how does it sound like you’re Lee Trevino?” “
I started his answer personally.
“Well, the first thing you do when you leave the house is say to yourself, ‘Be nice, be nice and say hello to everyone because people are going to come over to you,'” Trevino said on the show. “You could have a fork almost to your mouth and a guy would take your elbow and say, How are you, nice to see you, because I’m so accessible. They wouldn’t have done that.” [Ben] Hogan because Hogan was going to hit them with a wedge, you know what I’m saying. But they know I’m friendly. I expect that. My wife told me once, she told me when [they] Stop doing that, you can stay home too. You know, you’re right, I said, when they stopped doing that. I said, you’re absolutely right.”
From there, Trevino added his own personal touch.
“And I told her, I said, you know, I’m telling this story,” he said on the show, “I said, you know something, I said the pandemic was the greatest thing that ever happened to me.” And they said why. I said I wear a hat without a logo, I wear a mask, I wear sunglasses, and I can go anywhere I want to go without anyone bothering me.
And I said to her, I went to the grocery store, and I’m walking around the grocery store and a guy came up behind me, and he said, I know who you are. He said, I know you. I said, I know who you are. Sir? And he said fine. He said, Listen, I need a golf lesson. I said, Golf lesson? He said yes. That’s the truth.
And I said, You need a golf lesson, right? So much so that you can hear it go down. And I said, If you test my swing speed, you can’t get a ticket in the school district.
“I said, ‘So when do you want to start this lesson?’ That’s what I said to him, ‘Yeah.
McLaughlin asked, “So what was his reaction when I said all that?”
“Laugh, laugh,” said Trevino. I said, No, I appreciate that; thank you very much. He said, Well, okay.
“Isn’t that crazy?”
