With the US Open halfway through, the main events of the tournament are coming into focus. And the Los Angeles Country Club itself remains top of mind. After posting two record scores on Thursday, I played very differently on Friday. What will the weekend bring?
“[USGA chief championships officer John Bodenhamer] He said last night if someone shoots 20 under, they haven’t done their job,” said Dylan Dieter.
The game has begun!
Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler cemented their positions at the top of the leaderboard with a solid Touring ride on Friday. But both players know it will be an uphill battle if they are to win the US Open Cup on Sunday.
“I’ve been trying and have come close for the past nine years or whatever, and I keep coming back,” said McIlroy. “Whether that means I get a treat or I get punched in the gut or whatever it is, I always keep coming back.”
While both players have massive fan followings, there is at least one VIP who will be drawing on Fowler this weekend.
Boston Celtics center Blake Griffin was on site Friday to support friends Max Homma, Brooks Koepka and Colin Morikawa. But as to the roots of the interest?
He said, “I’d like to see Ricky win.”
With a weekend of uncertainty approaching, one thing’s for sure: You won’t want to miss a single second of the action.
