Josh Hart picks up $12.9 million with the New York Knicks for the 2023-24 season, sources say. This is part of a three-year, $37.92 million deal he signed with the New Orleans Pelicans in August 2021.
The subscription allows New York to maintain the full non-tax median level of $12.4 million while remaining below the $172 million first apron/cap. The Knicks have $4.6 million in bonus windfalls that count towards the first apron.
Hart, 28, made 52 starts in 76 games with the Portland Trail Blazers and Knicks in the 2022-23 season. The Villanova product averaged 9.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.2 steals and 32.3 minutes per game.
According to a few NBA betting sites, the New York Knicks are ranked 15th to win a championship next season in 2024. Check sportsbooks that show better odds for the Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks, and Philadelphia 76ers.

As part of a four-team trade in February, Josh Hart was traded by Portland to the Knicks, along with Danny Diez and Bojan Doblevic. The Charlotte Hornets traded Jalen McDaniels and a 2024 draft pick in the second round to the Philadelphia 76ers. And Knicks sent Svyatoslav Mikhailuk to Charlotte.
In addition, New York traded Ryan Arcidiocono, Cam Reddish, Antti Tomic, and a 2023 first-round draft pick to Portland. Philadelphia traded Charlotte a 2023 second-round draft pick and dealt Mathis Thibul to Portland. The Trail Blazers sent their 2027 second-round draft pick to the Hornets. Portland traded in 2029, second on the Sixers.
Josh Hart has a $12.9 million player option with the New York Knicks for the 2023-24 season prior to free agency, and the sign-up allows the team to own the entire non-tax median of $12.4 million.
New York won 124-106 Brooklyn Networks On February 13, the forward scored a season-high 27 points in 28 minutes off the bench. Along with tallying four boards, two assists, and one steal, Hart shot 10-of-14 (71.4%) from the floor and 4-of-6 (66.7%) outside the arc.
“I know the teams I’ve been with since he was in the league, we’ve always had an interest in him,” Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said of Josh Hart in February. “If you’re training against him or playing against him, those are the kinds of guys you respect.
“You respect a fierce competitor. He obviously has great talent. He wouldn’t be here without great talent. But his competitive spirit is special.”
By exercising his $13 million option for 2023-24, Josh Hart gave the Knicks more financial flexibility should they choose to sign a player — or players — with the exception of the non-taxpayer mid-level. Donte DiVincenzo Among the Players on NYK’s Radar: pic.twitter.com/dw47ZegWfo

Adjusting to Thibodeau’s system was a challenge for Hart after the mid-season trade. However, he went on to shoot 58% overall and 51.9% from 3-point range in 25 games in a Knicks uniform during the regular season. Most importantly, the addition of Hart bolstered New York’s second unit.
“I’ve been in a few different systems. This is my sixth trainer in six years,” said Josh Hart. “So it took a while to get used to it, but it’s definitely a green light. It’s not something I’ve had before, and I’m not mad about it. I didn’t feel down about it.
“That was the style we had in Portland. So now I come here and it gives me the ability to make plays, do ball screens, get dribbling and, like I said, just get the absolute go-ahead, so it gives me that confidence. So these picks Pick-up and catch are now more consistent.”
The NBA Free Agency begins Friday, June 30th at 6 PM ET.
