Jorge Masvidal’s father, Jorge Masvidal Fernandez, has been charged with attempted second-degree murder after shooting at the retired UFC star’s home in Miami.
The accident occurred on Thursday. “Gamebred” was not at home, and did not take part in the shooting.
A media relations official for the Miami-Dade Police Department confirmed to Cageside Press on Friday that Masvidal Sr. , 67, was arrested and charged with attempted second degree murder with a deadly weapon/firearm, following an early report in which the suspect’s name was withheld.
Miami-Dade police also filed an avatar and arrest affidavit.
According to this affidavit, a Miami-Dade police officer was flagged down by a member of Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue shortly after 3 p.m. local time on May 4, 2023 and directed to a nearby address, which turned out to be Jorge Masvidal’s home — though Although the fighter was not present at the time.
Fire and Rescue was transporting the victim, Louis Leoncini, who had gunshot wounds to both arms, to a nearby hospital. Leoncini, 58, who was described as a “family acquaintance” of Masvidal, told police the older man had shot him; Leoncini was later interviewed in depth at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital.
According to the victim, Masvidal Sr. shot him after a “verbal altercation” inside the house. Police later executed a search warrant and seized a . 38 caliber handgun inside a kitchen cupboard. According to Younesini, he was shot near the kitchen area.
Masvidal Sr. has been transferred. to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami, where he was still being held as of Thursday morning. A search of online records later in the day shows that $10,000 in bonds were posted.
None of the allegations against Jorge Masvidal Fernandez have been proven in court.
