Transfer day in the majors is always exciting. With the cut made and only the fittest of fitness players around for the weekend, quality golf is expected. And for players looking to win the title, the third round is the most important.
At this year’s Open Championship, the GOLF.com staff took an inside look at Moving Day at Royal Liverpool.
They didn’t have to wait long to see some of the fireworks. After making the cut with one stroke, John Ramm got out shooting Hoylake early, making eight birdies on his way to 63.
“I did what I needed to,” Ram said. “It gives myself a chance.”
And to get within walking distance of Brian Harman, he needed some help from the leader. With four punctures, it looked as if that help might come—but then, Harman nailed the ship.
After making two starts through his first four, Harman made four birdies and a bogey zero for the rest of the tour to rebuild his lead to five heading into Sunday.
But despite his impressive performance, the English fans did not shower him with praise. With European darlings like Ram, Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy in pursuit, crowds begged Harman to snag.
“There’s more to Brian Harman than we know, and I think he likes it that way,” GOLF.com’s Dylan Deether said. “The problem is we don’t know enough about Brian Harman to know we want to know more, so I guess that’s our job.”
As the sun set over Royal Liverpool FC on Saturday night, the stage was set for an epic final day at The Open Championship.
