At Augusta National, there is golf and there are rules. Even, as it turns out, to the Masters champion.
On this week’s episode of Subpar golfMasters winner John Rahm joined the podcast to discuss with hosts Drew Stultz and Colt Nost about his first-ever experience in green jackets, including perhaps the most nerve-wracking moment of Sunday’s Masters: the green jacket ceremony. rehearsal.
Now, not many golf fans know that before the winner of the green jacket arrives at the post-tournament ceremony, he meets with the Augusta National membership first to practice for what is soon to come.
“They made me train [the ceremony] Ram said. “I’m like, I’ve never thought of this in my life, right?”
After a brief locker session, Ram said, a team of green jackets paraded the winner through what was soon to come.
“They try on some jackets and all that, and then it’s like This is how you do thisRam said. “That’s so funny, they said the only rule I have to remember is not to shake Scotty’s hand first. To go to the boss first and then to him.”
Chief first, then Scotty. Seems simple enough, right? Not so fast.
“All the time I’m thinking about, like, don’t think about this,” Ram said, laughing. “then [we get to the ceremony] I stood up and the first person I saw was Scotty, even though he was trying to hide behind me.”
Fortunately, with Scheffler’s help, Ram remembered the appropriate handshake rhythm, reaching out to club president Fred Ridley before turning to Scheffler. It’s a funny memory now, since it all worked out. Even funnier considering that Ram could have been one of the few dozen people who realized a mistake had been made in the first place.
“The funny thing is, if you’ve done the wrong thing, no one will know.”
