Iowa Hawkeyes guard Caitlin Clark, women’s national basketball player of the year and golf fanatic, will play the John Deere Classic on Wednesday, July 5. He is the captain of the American Ryder Cup team for the US-European golf tournament later this year in Rome.
Johnson, Clark and their group will compete at the TPC Deere Run in Silves, Illinois. Following her tour, Clarke will participate in the Youth Clinic at the Driving Range.
“We are thrilled to offer our fans the opportunity to see Caitlin Clark and Zack Johnson, two athletic champions from Iowa, play,” said Tournament Director Andrew Lehmann. “Zach has been the face of the tournament for many years, and Caitlin’s presence will bring a jolt of electricity to the courses and help us introduce young people and golf enthusiasts to this great game.”
Last season, Clark, the 6-foot guard, led Iowa to a Big Ten championship, before reaching the NCAA Final, which the Hawkeyes lost to the LSU Tigers. She led the Division I women in assists per game (8.6), 3 made per game (3.68), 3 total (140) and triple-doubles (five), and was second in scoring average (27.8 PPG).
A Cedar Rapids native, Johnson has won 12 PGA Tour titles, including two majors: the 2007 Masters and 2015 British Open. Johnson, who plays golf collegiately with Drake in Des Moines, Iowa, has participated in the Ryder Cup five times.
A native of West Des Moines, Clark has been playing golf since childhood. The event is part of a busy summer for Clark, who won National Player of the Year honors last season, including the Associated Press Award, Wade Trophy, Naismith Trophy, and Wood Award.
On Saturday, she is scheduled to appear at the Iowa Cubs’ Triple-A baseball game in Des Moines, which will be Caitlin Clark Bobblehead Night In the field. This will be followed next week by Clark’s kids’ basketball camps in West Des Moines and Iowa City.
