Scotsman Stephen Ray dropped a unanimous decision to Nathan Schulte at PFL 3 on Friday, as part of the promotion’s lightweight season tournament.
Ray, a former UFC fighter, later revealed that he had a health scare before the fight, but kept the information under wraps. It appears as though 33-year-old Stephen Ray spent more than a week in the hospital after being diagnosed with MRSA which Ray believes could be a result of hair growth.
“Obviously he kept that calm, but that was what worried me the most / I was the closest to having to pull out of a fight,” Ray said on Instagram. “I only had cellulitis/MRSA 3-4 weeks ago being a warrior/fighter I stayed calm and worked around it but I’ve been in and out of the hospital for 9 days (IV antibiotics for 9 days no training but still trying to walk a lot of diet The hard one, I’ve been on antibiotics for 4 weeks!Even on my birthday, 4 different combinations of antibiotics.Flucoxacillan, ceftriaxone, daptomycin and then finally Co-trimoxazole.
“I would like to thank all the team at OPAT Plastic Surgery at Victoria Hospital who looked after me. MRSA is very dangerous because it is resistant to a lot of antibiotics. In this cruel game you don’t get paid if you don’t fight and I have a family to support and provide for a few people close to me They know about it.4 weeks out of my fight for 9 days I walked 10 miles a day and dieted hard while I had a bad leg infection just so I could fight this fight and like I said to provide for my wife and kids.
“I lost the fight fair and square and I got out of the fight but these are things not a lot of people see.”
One person on Instagram asked Ray, “Yikes! How did it start? Did something bite you?”
Ray replied, “Just fioame from an ingrown hair I think!”
An ingrown hair is a condition in which the hair curls back or grows sideways into the skin. This condition is more common among people who have coarse or curly hair. It may or may not be accompanied by infection of the hair follicles (folliculitis) or “razor bumps” (pseudofolliculitis), which vary in size. While ingrown hairs most commonly appear in areas where the skin is shaved or waxed (beard, legs, and pubic area), it can appear anywhere. Anything that causes hair to fall out unevenly with a sharp tip can cause ingrown hairs.[1] Ingrown hairs also occur due to a lack of normal exfoliation of the skin.
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a cause of staph infections that are difficult to treat due to resistance to some antibiotics.
