England’s Harry Hole missed out on his first win on the PGA Tour as Emiliano Grillo beat Adam Schenck in a playoff to win the Charles Schwab Challenge at the Colonial Country Club in Texas.
Argentine Grillo started the final round four shots behind third-round leader Hall, while the American Schenk was one shot down. When Hall stumbled, Grillo appeared to be on the verge of winning, but he was double stunned as he drove into a stream, which he carried his ball towards him. But Grillo was able to regroup from that mistake and parlayed the match-two hole to see off Schenk. It’s a second win on the PGA Tour for Grillo, who scored a two-under-par 68, but it’s his first since 2015.
Hall, who opened the week with a 10-under 62 and led in the first three rounds, started the final day at Colonial in bright colors, carding back-to-back putts on the first two holes, but bogeys on the 5th, 8th, 16th and 15th saw the lead evaporate. However, the 25-year-old found himself in a three-way clash at the top with Grillo and Schenk as he holed the final hole. However, while trying to claim his first PGA Tour title, he hit his tee into the water and made a closing bogey when he finished with a score of 73 to miss the playoff by a putt. Hall ended up tied for third with Scotty Scheffler, who finished with a 67.
Hall, who hails from Cornwall and entered the tournament ranked 197th in the world but is now 125th in the world, said: “I learned a lot today. I learned that you don’t always have to play great golf to win a tournament on a hard-slope golf course. You just have to hit it in the Mid green and don’t do anything stupid. Unfortunately I did stupid things today and it cost me. I misread a couple of short putts on the front nine, then made a bogey on the 15 with the 9-iron in my hand. And then I think I have a bit of a The adrenaline last time, and it bounces hard as I’m in the water. I didn’t even think the danger was there.”
He added, “Although I’m very disappointed, I’ve had another top 10 and 162 points in the FedEx Cup, and if you’d give me that at the start of the week, I’d have it.”
