Spring cleaning season! This means it’s the perfect time to get your golf bag ready for 2023. You know the story: After a long summer, our golf bags can sometimes double as bags with everything we put in them, but now is the time to do some inventory.
We recently gave you some ideas on the essentials Add to your bag for this spring, but now is the time to lighten the load. Here are a few things you definitely don’t need in your bag all the time—or something you should replace—because the only thing worse than a heavy golf bag are those frustrating three-putt scuffles.
7 things to remove from your golf bag
Alignment sticks
perfect for group; Please use it there. But no, they don’t have to be in your golf bag during your round. (Also, the longest can be dangerous!)
Extra golf balls
Six or seven good golf balls is probably all you need. Playing a tricky course wet with water? Well, add two more. It’s not a huge deal if you take a cart, but unnecessary golf balls weigh down your bag quickly.

Leftovers/snacks
Since last year? Total.
Gear rain on a sunny day
It’s always a good idea to have sunscreen in your bag, maybe even rain pants because they’re so light. But some rain jackets are bulkier, and while they handle unpredictable Open Championship-style weather with ease, a simple look at the forecast will likely let you know if you can safely leave your clothes in the closet.
Old clothes
One extra pair of socks? tasty. Three that haven’t been touched in two and a half years? Exaggerate.
3- Iron
Well, maybe not just a three-iron, but if there’s a club you either can’t hit or can’t hit, it doesn’t have to stay in your bag. Better yet, there’s probably something you can replace it with that you might use more often (like another wood or wedge).
Pain reliever (to replace it)
Speaking from experience here. It’s always a good idea to have something on hand to help with a backache or other problem area, but it’s also not a good idea to check the expiration date and replace it with something a little fresher.
