Davis’ performance was impressive but let’s not get carried away with the significance of his victory. Garcia has talent, power, and popularity, but he’s no better—and certainly no more accomplished—than some of Davis’ previous victims. We won’t know for sure how good Tank is until he beats at least one of the top 135-pound lifters, undisputed champions Devin Haney, Shakur Stephenson or Vasily Lomachenko. He’s worth putting on pound for pound now, with wins over the likes of Jose Pedraza, Leo Santa Cruz, Isaac Cruz, Rolando Romero, Hector Luis Garcia and now Ryan Garcia. However, that’s not enough to catapult him into the top 5 and eventually #1, where many believed he would eventually land. How will he do against Hani, Lomachenko and Stevenson, all of whom are much better boxers than Garcia? Maybe ok. probably. Victory over one or more of the above would be required to remove any doubt about Davis’ apparent greatness.
