Per Arthur StapleGerard Gallant, coach of the New York Rangers. The move was expected, though not so soon, as rumors of a continuing feud between the Gallant and general manager Chris Drury began hitting social media and the rumor factory. Gallant is the current leader in head coaching winning percentage among Rangers coaches with 100 games coached, and has led the Rangers to two playoff appearances and one Eastern Conference Final appearance.

Gallant may have made it with the Rangers, but the 2022-23 season looked like a success story in spite of the coach, not because of the coach. The Gallant have been plagued by in-game and lineup decisions throughout the season, and a 2-0 lead against the Devils seemed to be the final straw.
Lacking structure and identity under Gallant this season, the Rangers have relied on Igor Shesterkin and an elite force for most of their success. Given Drury’s methodical nature, this probably wouldn’t have been a rash decision, and Drury has a name to replace him in mind. Joel Quenneville is a name that keeps coming up.
