The PGA Tour Champions will have their own team competition in the form of the World Cup of Champions.
The inaugural trios competition between players from the United States, Europe and the rest of the world is set to take place December 7-10 at the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida.
Northern Ireland’s Jim Furyk and Darren Clarke and South Africa’s Ernie Els have been announced as first-team captains for 2021. The World Cup was expected to kick off for the first time in 2022 before being pushed back to 2023.
ABC and ESPN will broadcast the tournament, which will feature teams of PGA Tour Champions in a series of nine-hole team matches and singles matches, in a format similar to the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup in men’s golf and the Solheim Cup in women’s golf.
The team with the most points after a total of 24 matches will be declared the winner.
Furyk and Clark previously served as Ryder Cup captains for their respective teams. Els was captain of the 2019 Presidents’ Cup International Team.
Charlie Peiser, CEO of sports marketing and events company Intersport, is credited with bringing the idea to the tour 10 years ago.
“The idea was really to build on the excitement of the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup, to try to bring everyone, the whole world together in one event, so the three teams, the International Team, the European Team, and the American Team,” Besser told PGATour.com.
“And we all know that guys who play PGA Tour Champions have had some serious old scores to settle with each other, and they’re excited to get back out there and pursue them.”
