The NBA announced that the league will test the backward kick penalty and additional Coach Challenge during the 2023 Summer League games. On Tuesday, July 11, the NBA Board of Governors is scheduled to vote to approve rule changes that include twists and coach challenges.
If approved, the new changes will take effect for the 2023-24 season. The board votes to approve an in-game penalty for the flip, which would result in a technical foul free throw for the opposing team. These new rules are intended to improve the game.
In many NBA betting sites, the Denver Nuggets are an early favorite to repeat in 2024. Check out sports bets that still offer positive odds for the Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks, and Phoenix Suns.

“If a turnover penalty is assessed by game officials, the opposing team will be awarded one free throw and possession of the ball,” the NBA said in a statement. A player who commits the flop will be assessed as an unsportsmanlike technical foul, which is not considered a personal foul or result in an ejection.
“Officials will not be required to stop live to call a fumbled violation; they may wait until the next neutral opportunity to stop playing.”
Oftentimes, flopping is personal. One free throw can make or break a close game. The no-contact challenge may be something the league should look into.
In the NFL, coaches are issued red challenge flags at every game. If the coach fails the challenge, he or she evaluates the time out. Of course, if he wins the challenge, the time limit will not be ruled out. If the coach succeeds in the challenge twice, he or she is issued a third challenge. However, NBA games are shorter. So, this can make it more interesting.

Another idea being considered by the league involves awarding two challenges to the coach in a match if the first one is successful. The league added in its press release: “The proposed rule will give the team a second challenge to the coach if the first challenge is successful.”
“For reasons of game flow, a team will not keep the timeout used to start its second challenge, regardless of whether it is successful or not. The rules regarding the timeout governing a team’s use of its first challenge will not change.”
