The cool NRG from Nike, the Johnny collar trend, the Viktor head knit, a pullover from JT, one of the best retro collaborations of the year, and more. We break down the best and worst bouts from day two at Royal Liverpool.

Shupankar Sharma (Nike)
I’ve been plus/minus at Nike’s major corporate NRG releases this year, but Swoosh totally crushed it with this ‘Play to Live’ drop at The Open. The bubble font and free-flowing text have a cool flower-child vibe that pays homage to the birthplace of the Beatles.
Billy Horschel (Ralph Lauren and Footjoy)
Is it too early to say that Johnny’s white-collar polo is trending? After Windham Clarke won the US Open in one match and Billy Hurschel slipped once in the past two days, I think it’s safe to say we’ve reached trend status for this vintage design. It provides such a clean look.
Justin Thomas (Greyson Clothiers & FootJoy)
It was a bit of a somber black for JT, which may have been a reflection of the state of his game after the opening 82nd round, but the cardigan offered a healthy dose of interest, intrigue, and sophistication. Cardigans can be hard to pull off. Get it right and you’ll look like the boss. You get it wrong and it looks like Mister Rogers has gone bad. JT nailed it. If you opt for a cardigan, take a style tip from Justin and leave the bottom button unbuttoned.
Alex Noreen (Macade Golf & FootJoy)
Macade is a brand that has caught my eye over the past few years. Their seasonal collections bring a modern style to golf fashion that leans toward sportiness and athleticism with joggers, hoodies, quarter zips, and shorts. The brand has also spread its wings with several collaborations and limited edition capsules in retro designs. The latest is this collaboration with iconic British sportswear brand Admiral. The Admiral has a rich history in football (soccer) and fashion and reached its peak in the 1980s and 1990s. the Macade x Admiral capsule You click those throwback looks while merging golf and soccer with Johnny’s polo shirts (here they are again) that replicate vintage jerseys, stripe shorts, trainers, and long blazers.
Tony Finau (Nike)
Tony has unfortunately fallen on the wrong side of Dimes & Crimes more than once this year, but he hits all the right notes on this one. Soft pink polo shirt. Even the hoodie was careless, and the basic Air Jordan 1s in black and white allowed the rest of the fit to focus on.
Sam Burns (Travis Mathew) and Max Homma (Footjoy)
get it; Navy blue and gray aren’t exactly a risky color combination, but they’re both very different. Perhaps that is the subtle detail. Perhaps it is the sapphire tones that the navy blues have.
Zac Johnson (Ralph Lauren and Footjoy)
Ralph Lauren will once again outfit the American Ryder Cup team this year and captain Zack Johnson is already sampling some RL leads. Are we starting to see color blocking return to the hallways? And hey! How about those custom photos?!
Ben Griffin (Holderness & Born & Footjoy)
Finally, someone gave us a splash of color at Royal Liverpool. Holderness & Born is a brand that has taken their game to another level this year and I’m a fan of them. I can’t wait for the Fall Collection to drop.
Sunjae Im (JDX & FootJoy)
In a day with so many retina-damaging prints and patterns (see below), Sungjae Im proves that diamonds can be a man’s best friend.
Denny McCarthy (Redvanly & Adidas)
A little tip on the jacket collar goes a long way. Subtle but effective.
Dustin Johnson (Extracurricular and Foot Joey)
Name the player who wears a technical jacket better than Dustin Johnson. I will wait…
Wyndham Clark (Communal and Footjoy)
What can Brown do for you? Brown belts continue to be in style and Wyndham Clarke showed us another way to wear them with a teal polo and white pants. Note the thinness of the belt.
Rory McIlroy (Nike)
Nothing flashy from Rory today, but his simplest bouts tend to be what works best for him. This was certainly an all business look from the Rors. Now, when will Nike release all of these awesome jerseys that Rory has been wearing this year?

Victor Hofland (J.Lindeberg & Puma Golf)
I’m so annoyed with Hovland’s outfit, I’m not sure if it’s low fire or a crime. what do you think?
Fashion crimes
Wallace died
Matt Wallace is a multiple Threadie winner. An award given to a selection of the best-dressed players in a given year. It pains me to accuse him of a fashion felony. I’m not sure how much J. Lindeberg pays for this shirt, but it’s not enough. I want to know the sales figures for this shirt and who will actually buy it.
Se Woo Kim
Enough already! My eyes couldn’t take much more than that.
Taiga Semikawa
Many things here. Black shoes with white socks, as well as black shoes with orange pants round out the whole look. White tights with orange joggers aren’t cool either. sigh.
Keita Nakajima
There’s a lot going on here between a polo shirt and camouflage sleeves.
John Daly
Yesterday our tour editor Michael Ruska said, “If I had to say something positive about John Daly’s outfit, I think it would be…at least he doesn’t wear Hooters pants…”
John Daly said today, “Hold my Diet Coke.”
