Eddie Alvarez makes no apologies for his wife.
Jimmy Alvarez is a devoted and loving wife whose husband also happens to be a mixed martial arts legend; And if you’ve ever watched one of his fights, you know exactly who she is. Or at least what it looks like.
When Alvarez has a fight, his wife is usually present — and when she is, she makes her presence known by shouting “EDDIE!” constantly during combat. The occurrence is so common that there several YouTube compilations for documenting the phenomenon and becoming a meme for the MMA community. And this past weekend was no different, as Jamie Alvarez was present at her husband’s naked fight with Chad Mendes at BKFC 41, once again supporting “The Underground King” in the best way possible.
On Monday, while speaking on MMA watchAlvarez also spoke about the jokes made about his wife’s screaming.
“Listen, this is my damn chick,” said Alvarez, laughing, “and if anyone has anything to say, he can go himself.” “My wife has been watching me fight – we met each other when we were 15, we have four kids together. I’m her nice guy, and if something happens to me – now you can feel her pain and feel what she feels. She has four of my kids. It’s my fucking ride or die She can’t control what’s going on, her screaming, her screaming, that’s how it feels. It’s real. So if you don’t like it, deal with it. But it’s real.”
Jimmy Alvarez’s anxiety this weekend was certainly real as her husband got everything he could handle from Mendes, who repeatedly took down “The Underground King” in the match and constantly found a home for his power shots. Ultimately, Alvarez was able to fight through the adversity and scratch a split decision win in the best fight of the weekend.
“When I go back to watch the fight, I think the fifth round won the fight for me,” he said. “I chased him well in the fifth, but we were like that the whole time. Chad’s wonder cannon, man. He’s a beast. I would have been totally fine with a draw. If they had asked for a draw, I would have been great. It would have been a great night as well as a win.”
“I always think about when I go there [that] My job is not to win. Not winning. I’ve been obsessed with winning my whole life, and it’s not fun, and I’m born to win. So my job is to fight like a tireless hero, like a dog, and then drive the fans absolutely crazy. If I can get that out of a fan, I win. We all won.”
And in Alvarez fights, there will always be at least one fan who does just that.
