Hey there, friends, and welcome to this week’s Rogers Report! I am writing to you from home in Rhode Island, where I have downgraded from hanging out with the LPGA pros to hanging out with my brothers.
Just kidding, maybe, but I got a chance to make a quick trip to Pebble Beach to spend the day with the EA Sports PGA Tour. I got to explore the real-life path while also playing the video game version, so it’s like I’ve seen Pebble twice. First she played Daniel Kang with golfer/golfer Daltouch and Cassandra Meyer. Then we met up with Kang, who was so excited to see herself in the video game.
It was a quick but surreal ride, culminating in my first-ever red eye home, and I lived to tell the tale (I instantly got lost and fell asleep the whole way). There’s a lot of action unfolding in Pebble Beach this week with the US Women’s Open being played there for the first time (!) so let’s get to it, but only after watching this amazing video of Michelle Wei West looking back on her career from before her event the last this week.
How unique is that? I’ll admit I cried while watching it, and I can only imagine what it must have been like for Wie West to relive those moments.
Some great stories of the US Open Women’s Championship
There are some amazing storylines that have been shown at Pebble Beach this week, and while this isn’t the complete list, here are some of my favourites. We’ll start with Michelle Wie West at her latest event.
Again, I can’t imagine what feelings you must be feeling this week. I was so sad to say goodbye to high school sports 10 years ago, and this is… absolutely nothing like that. Wie West has dedicated her entire life to the game, and her career is about to end!
There are endings and beginnings. We have 20-year-old Rose Zhang playing in her first All-American Championship as a pro — and 14-year-old Angela Zhang playing her, too!
It’s a week last for some and a first for others, which is what makes events like this so special. Next we have Lexi Thompson, who is playing in her 17th (!) US Women’s Open Championship at just 28 years old.
I’m the same age as Lexi and can’t think of anything productive I’ve been doing consistently for 17 years. Golf Digest’s Luke Kerr-Dineen put this into perspective when he noted that 51-year-old Padraig Harrington had just played in his 17th US Open.
Amy Olson is trying it out at Pebble Beach this week while seven months pregnant (yes, you read that right).
If Olson wins this week, is her child technically also the US Open champion? This is the fun fact that will turn a lot of heads into future college orientations one day.
Finally, we have Emilia Miliacio, who works in the field And Calling the shots (literally) at Pebble Beach this week. When you’re not sharing, you’ll be with featured groups on Peacock.
Great open american content
To accompany the storylines at Pebble Beach this week, there was some great social media content from the US Women’s Open. We’ll start with one of my favorites of all time: the Taylor Swift crossover Golf.
I really hope most of you know what iteration of this is, but just in case a few of you don’t, here’s some help side by side:
I’m definitely feeling a theme here, because the ad for the US Women’s Open features Taylor Swift’s “Wildest Dreams.”
The US Women’s Open has been pumping out great content all week, so I guess what I’m saying here is that you should definitely follow them on Instagram and Twitter. They had PGA Tour players pick this week’s winners, married caddy duos play a game for the newlyweds and more!
The debut of Caitlin Clark’s Pro-Am
We learned Caitin Clark was a fan of golf during Masters week this year, but it wasn’t until this week that we learned she’d got her game on the course, too.
The Iowa Hawkeyes star made it to the John Deere Classic Pro-Am on Wednesday and began her tour by hitting mid lane.
Is there anything Clark can’t do? She also had a lot of fan following on her tour and later chatted with the media afterwards.
Zack Johnson gave her a few pointers about her game, so don’t be surprised when she starts tearing it up in amateur events. Maybe it has a Pebble Beach Pro-Am in its future? Only time will tell.
The Bachelor content: Nikki Guidish!
We’re having another professional golf wedding, folks! I am sure of that exactly when Patrick Cantlay and Nikki Giddish tie the knot, but I know Giddish threw a bachelor party recently. Thanks to Maya Shaveli, who was on The Bachelorette and shared the photos below.
There’s nothing quite like a great night at a bachelorette party, so sparkles were a great choice. I’m very curious to know what Patrick Cantlay does at his bachelor party! Is he a Vegas boy? Lake man? I’d like to know, but as someone who doesn’t use social media much, we might never find out.
Lil Wayne: My favorite golf fan
DJ Khaled has been getting a lot of love lately in the golf world. was on the cover Golf Digest Recently, he has been posting videos from the tournament talking about his love for the game. All of which is fine as long as we don’t overlook another celebrity who also plays golf: Lil Wayne. Not only was he interested in Ricky Fowler and his win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, he had a history of pursuing golf very Carefully.
There are currently no photos of Lil Wayne on a golf course on Getty Images, but I hope that changes soon. Weezy, assuming you’re a loyal reader of Rogers Report, please know that I love hanging out at an event. Let me know and we can make something happen.
