Last week against the Washington Commanders, the Dallas Cowboys offense dominated. The Seattle Seahawks, in their Thanksgiving game, were met with frustration. But which team has the better offense? Let’s break it down by position and find out.
QUARTERBACK
Dak Prescott
vs.
Geno Smith
Dak had himself another outstanding game on Thanksgiving and now has a legitimate call for MVP, or at least Offensive Player of the Year. He was solid on the day against the Washington Commanders throwing for over 300 yards, four touchdowns and played another game with zero interceptions. His efficiency and effort is above all expectations at the moment. He is now second in the league in completion percentage (70%), passing touchdowns (23), and passer rating (107.4). He faces a Seattle Seahawks defense that has allowed the 11th-most passing yards and has made fourth-fewest interceptions this season.
Geno Smith had a breakout season last year and reinvigorated the Seahawks offense that was in danger of going stagnant. This year the Seahawks have started stagnating again and Smith has been struggling to maintain the high standards he played at last year. The offense is scoring 21 points-per-game, which ranks 11th-fewest, and Smith has thrown for only 12 touchdowns, that’s ninth-fewest among starting quarterbacks. Last week against the San Francisco 49ers, Smith threw zero touchdowns and one interception. Since Week 6, he’s thrown the same number of touchdowns as he has interceptions.
Conclusion:
Dak is riding high, the offense is humming along and peaking with each game. Seattle and the Smith-led offense have lost three of their last four games, and in those losses scored only 32 total points.
Win: Cowboys
RUNNING BACK
Tony Pollard/Rico Dowdle
vs.
K.Walker/Z.Charbonnet
Who’s on-board the Tony Pollard train? We predicted last week that the progression of his running efficiency over the last few weeks would culminate in a big game. Pollard played a solid game and was fantastic when the Cowboys looked to maintain possession of the ball and kill the game against Washington. He averaged 6.1 yards-per-carry and went for 79 yards and a touchdown. He was also very effective as a blocker last week and helped to keep Dak from getting pressured. Rico Dowdle also had a say in last week’s rushing performance, he had three attempts and managed to snag a first down. But Dowdle’s big contribution was in the passing game were he scored a touchdown on a screen.
Walker is listed as doubtful because of an oblique strain he suffered on the opening drive against the L.A. Rams a couple of weeks ago. He missed last week’s game against the 49ers and if he can’t play again, Zach Charbonnet will take the starting role. Charbonnet is averaging 4.6 yards-per-carry, which isn’t bad. But he has yet to score a rushing or receiving touchdown this year. The Seahawks offense has struggled this year with their ground game, which is crazy to say when you think how the Seattle offense used to play in the past. They average 95 rush yards per game, that’s seventh-lowest in the NFL.
Conclusion:
The Cowboys defense has done well against the run lately and is allowing 109 rush yards per game. The Seahawks defense are allowing 118 yards per game and the fourth-most rushing touchdowns this year
Win: Cowboys
WIDE RECEIVERS
CeeDee Lamb/Brandin Cooks/Michael Gallup
vs.
D.K Metcalf/T.Lockett/J.Smith-Njigba
Lamb had another impressive week and scored another touchdown. But what’s most exciting and impressive about the Cowboys receiver corps is how they are playing as a collective. Brandin Cooks played another fantastic game and led the team in receiving last week. Jalen Tolbert, KaVontae Turpin and Jalen Brooks played huge parts in last week’s game. If this group of receivers can continue to play to the standard they are at right now, fans should feel extremely optimistic about the teams ability to go deep in the playoffs.
D.K. Metcalf leads the Seahawks in receiving with 678 yards, but he’s only scored three touchdowns this year. He has only one game this year where he’s managed to go over 100-yards receiving in a game, and has scored one touchdown in his last three games. Tyler Lockett, who’s been a steady and consistent force for Seattle for a while now, looks to also be having his struggles. In the last three weeks, he’s managed to produce 103 receiving yards and against the 49ers last week, he had two receptions for 10 yards. Jaxon Smith-Njigba has also struggled and disappointed given his hype coming g out of Ohio State. He has eight games this season going for less than 50 yards and has failed to get a touchdown in the last five games.
Conclusion:
The Cowboys currently own the second-most productive wide receiver in the NFL and are finding all kinds of ways to get the rest of their receivers involved. Seattle is hitting a slump at the moment and in the last three games, has scored the fourth-fewest passing touchdowns.
Win: Cowboys
TIGHT END
Jake Ferguson
vs.
Noah Fant
Jake Ferguson is going from strength-to-strength. He only made one reception last week for 35 yards, but his run blocking was fantastic. His usage in the passing game last week came down to the flow of the game, but the role he played in helping seal blocks or getting in front helped Pollard have an extremely effective day.
Noah Fant is having a tough run lately. He’s totaled 35 receiving yards in the last four weeks and has scored zero touchdowns all season.
Conclusion:
Jake Ferguson has more receiving yards, touchdowns and has been a more effective blocker in both the run game and on passing plays.
Win: Cowboys
OFFENSIVE LINE
The Cowboys offensive line goes another game without allowing a sack. That’s now three consecutive games they’ve kept Dak clean. The Cowboys offensive line has allowed a total of 108 pressures this year, that’s ninth-best this year. They will be facing a Seattle defense that has produced the fifth-fewest sacks in the last three games.
Last week against the 49ers, the Seahawks offensive line allowed Smith to get sacked six times. The offensive line has allowed the eighth-most sacks this year and has been a major factor to the failures in the ground game. They are facing a defense that ranks fourth in sacks and have allowed the fifth-fewest rushing touchdowns.
Win: Cowboys
