Cowboys roster: No deal to bring back Tony Pollard, season will officially play on franchise tag – RJ Ochoa, Blogging the Boys
Did the Cowboys learn the lesson from awarding Ezekiel Elliott a big dollar contract?
Dallas elected to tag Tony Pollard at $10 million for the 2023 season. The team would go on to release fellow running back Ezekiel Elliott and save that much money, effectively swapping one for the other out financially.
Part of what defines Pollard’s financial situation is that he’s on the label that only promises a contract for the 2023 season. Pollard signed his label back in late March and is obviously well aware of that, but he and the team had until today (July 17) to come up with a long-term deal.
This did not happen.
Dallas Cowboys RB Tony Pollard will officially play the 2023 season on the franchise tag
Today marked the deadline for franchise-acquired players to strike long-term deals with their teams. With that not happening, we now know beyond a reasonable doubt that Pollard will play the 2023 season on the mark with a net worth of around $10 million.
3 Important Questions for the Cowboys at Running Back Matt Jermak, Landry Cap
Deuce Vaughn may have a great story, but there’s no shortage of competition for him in Malik Davis, Rico Dowdle, and Ronald Jones.
2. How does Deuce Vaughn contribute to the first year?
Vaughn is one of the youngest linebackers in NFL history. He’s played against the Big 12 defenses the past three seasons. Despite the excitement over the casting – which is unwarranted – it’s unfair to expect anything resembling a major role for Deuce in 2023.
However, there are plenty of ways he can contribute right away. John said yes already He wants to see Vaughn as a protector in the punt game and as a potential return option. Even if his offensive role is accurate, we’ll likely see Vaughn on special teams in some capacity.
When considering a potential offensive role in 2023, think more along the lines of Lance Dunbar or Lucky Whitehead than the younger Pollard. The iPhone’s contribution as a tool and weapon will come outside of the retail space. He’s at his best when his petite and cunning frame can cause trouble for the Seven’s defensive backs.
Pollard burst onto the scene in 2019 as a true sprinter among competitors. It’s very likely that Vaughn won’t do the same. These carriers may come along as the year progresses, but there are other running backs more suited to the role as Vaughn adjusts to the NFL.
Cowboys players who need an impressive camp to avoid getting cut – Christopher Knox, Bleacher Report
When Lewis is able to stay on the field, he’s a versatile defender, but his time in Dallas may be cut short.
CB Jordan Lewis
Cornerback Jourdan Lewis looks like he’s almost shut out to make the roster, at least in the beginning. He was a productive defender for Dallas, particularly in the slot, and he allowed an opposing passer rating of “fair.” 74.2 in coverage last season.
However, Lewis is also coming off a foot injury that limited him to just seven games in 2022. He’s entering the final year of his contract, and last year’s injury may have helped Dallas uncover a replacement for Lewis.
With Lewis sidelined, the Cowboys turned to then-rookie DaRon Bland. The 2022 fifth-round pick took over the role of Lewis Nickel before moving to the Ocean later in the year to replace an injured Anthony Brown.
Bland was good as a starter. He recorded seven passes defensed, an impressive five interceptions and allowed an opposition passer rating at fair 82.2 in coverage. Bland’s presence means Lewis will have to prove he’s healthy to have a chance at getting his job back. The 27-year-old is optimistic.
“I know from training camp that I’m going to do chops and things like that,” Lewis said in June. David Moore affiliate Dallas Morning News. “I’m just trying to see if it’s going to be full speed.”
A team with championship aspirations can never have too many good corner kicks, and Lewis can be a great depth player if he returns to his pre-injury level.
However, anything less than a strong, healthy camp would make Lewis a strong candidate. Save the cowboy $4.7 million in 2023 by releasing him and giving Bland a clear path to play in the process.
Farniok and Biadasz Fight for the Starting Position in the Cowboys’ Future – Reid Hanson, The Cowboys Wire
While Biyadash looks like he’s being held at the starting position, Farniuk could have his name running at left guard.
Injury aside, Biadasz is looking to solidify the Cowboys’ offensive line again in 2023. Aside from a handful of non-manufactured free agents, Dallas hasn’t brought much competition to the 25-year-old Wisconsin product. But that doesn’t mean Biadas’ future is secure.
While Biadasz has been fairly consistent and reliable throughout his time in Dallas, he has not progressed as some had hoped. Admittedly, rating the central gameplay is tricky because the shared tasks and responsibilities can be tricky to understand, but overall, Bayadash was no better than average. (PFF rates it well below average).
While simply being an NFL player should be seen as a wow at a third-day pre-round pick, a mediocre to below-average player isn’t necessarily someone who’s guaranteed a multi-year extension. This is where Matt Farniuk comes in.
Farniuk is a cowboy super-utility businessman. He is a favorite among the coaching staff and can play all three indoor locations and should see plenty of pre-season action in the coming weeks.
If Varniuk can show he’s more than just a professional reserve, he can finally push Biadas out the door after this season.
