McCarthy Cowboys miss rookie camp by running back — Todd Archer, ESPN
In recovery from a chronic illness, head coach Mike McCarthy missed the rookie mini camp.
McCarthy was virtually in the meetings as the Cowboys opened their rookie camp on Thursday. It was the only in-field part of the junior camp on Saturday and it was for just over an hour. Owner and General Manager Jerry Jones spoke briefly to the players before practice.
Special Teams Coordinator John Vassell brought the players together at the end of the session.
“It’s easy because Mike was always very clear, ‘Hey, that’s what we’re going to do,’ so we had a real vision of what we wanted to accomplish this weekend with these guys,” said Defensive Coordinator Dan Quinn. “It’s basically just taking those first steps.” And I think Mike would agree that we don’t miss a step in their development and see what we have and how we connect with them and experience them and see where we are now. And then we’ll start with Mike and everyone here this week to bring everyone together. So if there’s a time we miss he never feels right but we all know we have his back and we’ll get him back soon.”
Rookies and veterans will work together for the first time Monday in Phase 2 of the offseason program. Organized team activities start in two weeks.
The return of McCarthy, who has been dealing with back issues for some time, is not evident but he is not expected to be out for long.
Fassel mentions 3 possible veteran Kicker options – Nick Eatman, Dallascowboys.com
Having gone this far in the off-season, the Dallas Cowboys have an urgent piece of unfinished business to attend to. The team has not yet touched on what they will do with the placekicker. When it comes to team plans, special teams coach John Fassell doesn’t mince words.
“We have Tristan on the list. Anyone else on Earth who is not on the team at the moment is under consideration.” “That’s really everyone. I think we have a lot of different guys that we still look up to – XFLThe USFL, the veterans on the street, the youngsters who haven’t found their way yet.”
Of course, adding a veteran football player with NFL experience is probably the easiest route.
“It’s probably the easiest way[to go]because you know what you’re going to get,” Vassell said. “If you’re going to bring them in, you have to be excited about what it is. There are veterans on the street right now — let’s face it, there’s Mason (Crosby), there’s Robbie (Gould), there’s (Ryan) Succop. There’s a lot of guys who’ve performed in NFL, and you weigh that against everything else. There are no secrets about who’s really available. The good thing for us kickers is to be patient and decide which second person we’ll bring in, whether that’s now or training camp.”
Vassell didn’t even rule out the possibility of bringing back Brett Maher, who had a good regular season before dropping four extra points in his playoff win over the Boss.
“I think everything is on the table,” Fasel said. “Let’s face it, if you look at Bret, he’s had a great year. He had a bad game. But he played 22 games, but he’s had a bad game and a half. I think everyone’s on the table. I’m proud of what Brett did here. If he gets a chance here or Elsewhere, I’m sure he’ll do well.”
The Cowboys hold an all-time advantage against the record-breaking giants – Richard Paolinelli, inside star
It was announced this week that the Dallas Cowboys will open the 2023 season against their rivals New York Giants. The long-running rivalry favors the Cowboys in a big way.
When the Cowboys open the season on the night of September 10thyThey will do so against an opponent they have dominated for six decades. In the previous 122 meetings between the two franchises, Dallas holds the record 73-47-2 against the New York Giants. The Cowboys outscored New York by an aggregate score of 2,815-2,355.
At home, Dallas is 40-21-1 with a 1,480-1,135 scoring advantage. On the road, Dallas has a record of 33-26-1 against the Giants with a 1,335-1,220 scoring advantage.
The Cowboys have won the last two games—and five of the last six—played against the Giants at MetLife Stadium and have been 9-4 overall since it opened in 2010. Dallas was 14-19 at Giants Stadium against the Giants in the Meadowlands. The Cowboys defeated the Giants 24-14 in New York’s first-ever home game at that stadium.
Cowboys DC Dan Quinn specifies Micah Parsons not full-time move to defensive end RJ Ochoa, blogging for boys
For a while there was speculation that Micah Parsons was moving to defensive end. That’s not quite the case, the defensive coordinator explains.
Dan Quinn said Micah Parsons is not making a full-time move to defensive end
The Cowboys are in the middle of a small novice camp which means members of the organization have a chance to meet the local media. Head coach Mike McCarthy was noted for being out and about recovering from back surgery (our best for Mike McCarthy), but several coordinators were behind the proverbial mic.
This obviously includes defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, and as you can imagine he was asked about Parsons making the move in light of the recent news. Quinn shut that down pretty quickly.
It’s certainly interesting that Dan Quinn specifically said the line “If you ever need a change of heart, come to me” and notice what he said Believes Parsons was trying to say. Perhaps the cowboys (who wouldn’t say this in any kind of drama-inducing way) weren’t happy Parsons said what he did. Or maybe they’re just excited about Parsons continuing to play some linebacker. It should also be noted, just to cover all the bases, that after next season Parsons will be eligible for a contract extension for the first time, and that defensive ends are paid a lot more than linebackers if we rely on the literal definition of things.
Whatever the Cowboys want to list next to Parsons’ name at Two Depths, depth charts and/or roster sheets aren’t really relevant. He’s one of the best pass catchers in the NFL, and he’ll be heralded as one of the best, but it would make more sense.
