One thing the Cowboys must focus on to have more success in the final game – Luka Macherin, Landry cap
Is a deep playoff tour coming? Coach Mike McCarthy has a plan to try to make that happen.
After a highly successful 12-5 season and a dominant wild card performance, the San Francisco 49ers defense Finally shut down the team. Dallas has been dealing with some injuries (as most teams do) but has also had expensive flops and lack of success with third downs.
In the Cowboys’ last three playoff losses, they have failed to have a third-party conversion percentage higher than 36, with two of them including a turnover average. That would put them 7th in the standings in the league through the 2022 regular season. Not getting a new set of touchdowns has killed them.
Easier said than done, but avoiding turning the ball over and converting it on third down will go a long way. Keeping things simple and playing more efficiently rather than flashy is a step towards achieving this. The team has taken steps in the right direction to ensure that this happens this year.
The Cowboys must be more effective on offense to make a deep playoff run
“I don’t want to be the number one offense in the league. I want to be the number one team in the league with a number of wins and a championship. And if we have to give up some production and take better care of the ball to get that, that’s what we’ll do, because we have a really good defense.”
Why the Cowboys Should Re-Sign Dak Prescott ASAP – Red Hanson, Cowboys Wire
It’s time to lock in the Duck for the long term before its price goes up.
Jerry and Stephen Jones have been known to stick to “deal-cutting deadlines” but this may be a situation where they can’t afford to hit a hard deadline.
Obviously, the inevitable deadline is the start of the 2024 season in March. Since the Cowboys don’t want to be stuck with a nearly $60 million cost, they need to extend up front. They know this and more importantly the Prescott camp knows this. It is safe to say that the closer they are to that date, the higher the player’s leverage.
If that’s not reason enough to get something done right away, there are ominously unknown deadlines lurking in the shadows.
Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Trevor Lawrence (fifth-year option not yet picked), Toa Tagovailoa, Jared Goff They are all set to hit market at the same time as Prescott (per OTC). Three of them will almost certainly reset the market in QB while the other two could still realistically beat Prescott’s current APY of $40 million on their new deals.
With market values for the best QBs rising with nearly every signing, it’s in the Cowboys’ interest to get ahead of this surprising batch of contracts.
NFL approves starting rule, contingent quarterback policy, and growth of World Markets program at regular spring meeting – Jazz Monet, Inside The Star
What does this mean for the second leg going forward?
On Tuesday, American football clubs Approved 2023 Play Rule Proposition 16A. It will change how fair catches are handled on kickoffs.
The motion changes the language of Article 10, Section 2, Section 4b of the NFL rulebook.
Previously, the rule stated that after a fair catch, the ball could be run from the place of the catch.
The approved proposal adds the following language to that rule:
“Unless a player on the receiving team makes a fair catch of a free kick behind the receiving team’s 25-yard line, in which case the ball will be put into play at the receiving team’s 25-yard line.”
A rule can take away the excitement of a kickoff return. It can also reward returning teams with a lot of extra yards that they wouldn’t get under the previous rule.
Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy raves about new Bills OL Connor McGovern David DiCristofaro, Yahoo Sports
Should the franchise have played a bigger role in its retention?
Buffalo bills GM Brandon Bean embarked on an off-season mission to improve his offensive line and defense Josh Allen.
He did just that, adding talent and depth to the position pool to improve competition for starting innings as well as, ultimately, fielding results.
While the position battles in training camp are yet to unfold, there are some players, like recent free agent signing W New Bills guard Connor McGovernwho come with high hopes. Suffice it to say, Buffalo signed him to a three-year deal at the age of 25 after a four-year stint dallasbecause he can be a plug-and-play offensive lineman between C. Mitch Morse and OT Deon Dawkins.
Bean noted when reconciling with the offensive lineman in free agency that he believed his best play was ahead of him, and that he was not alone in this expectation.
The former McGovern coach also expressed the same sentiment.
“I think it’s definitely on the rise,” said Dallas Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy Earlier this year during the NFL Annual Meetings. “Really, Connor’s challenge was his early career injuries,” said McCarthy. “His best football is in front of him.”
