Cowboys WR Brandin Cooks: Time to get back to 1,000-yard seasons after a year – Kevin Batra, NFL.com
It’s no secret what Brandin Cooks hopes to achieve in 2023.
‘It’s time to come back,’ the cooks told NFL Network’s Maurice Jones-Drew and Patrick Claybon. NFL Total Access. “A lot has to come with that. At the end of the day, as I said earlier, we’ve got some quality players throughout the attack, all the offensive weapons we have, I’ll do my best to the best of my ability and when we look at the end of the season we’ll see where we are.”
During a turbulent season in Houston, as the Cooks struggled to spend another year permanently rebuilding, the wide receiver posted 699 yards with three touchdowns on 57 carries in 13 games. This performance came after consecutive 1,000+ yard carries with the Texans.
The 2022 lineup of chefs included a trade order from Houston, and Al-Arayedh said Thursday he was “very close” to landing at Dallas last season. This year, the Cowboys sealed the deal to bring in a field stretcher that should help open the offense for Dak Prescott.
The chefs add a necessary element to the crime along with star CeeDee Lamb.
“I think I’m only going into Year 10, and being able to get special receivers around me like CeeDee, MG (Michael Gallup) and JT (Jalen Tolbert), not only from a production role I expect but also from a leadership ability role,” he said. “So I think that’s what I’m looking forward to. So obviously I want to come back to win, and whatever that looks like, I’m willing to do it.”
Cowboys break: Cole Beasley tags with NFC East rival Mike Fisher, Cowboys Country
The “Sauce” returned to the NFC East, this time with New York.
Cole Beasley has bounced in and out of the NFL the past two years. But at 34, the former Dallas-area native and Cowboys thinks there’s a lot of “bounce back” left…and he now signs with New York Giants try to prove it.
Beasley has been training recently with current Buffalo Bills linemates Gabe Davis and Matt Milano in preparation for what Beasley said was his July 21 tryout with the NFL team.
Last season, Beasley, he was with Tampa Bay Buccaneers For a short time, it’s sandwiched between two cycles with the Bills. At the end of last season, he returned to the NFL and signed with the Bills. The slot receiver has only played in two games for the Josh Allen-led Bills, totaling 18 receiving yards.
Report: Broncos agree to terms for kicker Brett Maher – Scotty Payne, Mile High Report
Money Maher has finally arrived with a team and his former coach, Sean Payton.
Maher worked out for the Broncos earlier in the season and was seen as a favorite for the team’s vacant kicking job, but they ended up signing kicker Elliott Frey instead. Since then, it has been speculated that the Broncos will still add to this kicking position off the season and they did just days before training camp began.
The Broncos kickers freshman kicked for the Dallas Cowboys last season and was pretty automated until it had a meltdown during the postseason. He made 29 of 32 kicks (90.6%), 9 of 9 from 20 to 29 yards, 5 of 5 from 30 to 39 yards, 6 of 7 from 40 to 49 yards, and 9 of 11 from 50+ yards. His longest kick was a 60-yard kick against Minnesota in their 40-3 victory over the Vikings.
For extra points, Maher made 50 of 53 kicks during the regular season but struggled during the postseason. He made only 1 of his 6 extra point attempts during the postseason but did make 2 field goal attempts. This poor showing is the reason he did not return to the Cowboys and he is currently a free agent. However, it looks like he’ll be reuniting with Sean Payton in Denver if he does well during this workout.
Calling the Role: Brandon Aubry Tries for the USFL to the NFL – Nick Harris, Dallascowboys.com
Speaking of the kicker’s position with the Dallas Cowboys…
How did he get here: A former football star at nearby Plano High School and in Our LadyAubrey was drafted in the first round of the Major League Soccer (MLS) Draft in 2017 as an elite defender. However, by the end of 2018, Aubry was out of Major League Soccer and out of football with his eyes set on becoming an NFL replacement player. It would be four years before Aubrey got his chance with the NFL’s Birmingham Stallions in 2022. Aubrey played two seasons with the Stallions and was one of the best players in the league, earning NFL honors in 2022 and converting on 48 of his 49 kicks in 2023 (14-for-15 FJ, 35-for-35 PAT). Dallas later signed Aubrey as the second player on the roster on July 6.
What then: The post-Brett Maher era in Dallas has raised plenty of questions about how Dallas might attack the upcoming position, and despite the availability of veteran options like Robbie Gould and Mason Crosby, the Cowboys saw Brandon Aubry as the best competition for Tristan Vizcaino in the preseason. The starting job will likely come down to one of these two options with both of them getting a chance to be the guy in training camp. If Aubrey wins, he will be the second former NFL star to make his way to the Dallas roster, joining Cavontae Turpin who solidified himself as a starting returner in training camp last season after being named the 2022 USFL MVP.
