The scores for the Cowboys draft have been a mixed bag over the past three days. crew in Dallas Morning News he A good example of this:
- Michael Gilkin: a
- David Moore: b
- Tim Collishaw: b
- Kevin Sherrington: B-
- Joseph Hoyt: C+
- Calvin Watkins: C
The synopsis of Jehlikon’s “In-McClay-I-Trust” reflects an idea many cowboy fans share:
Show some respect here towards the Cowboys’ residents and their track record. If the front office and coaching staff, including the likes of Will Maclay and Dan Quinn, as well Overjoyed by eight players, It seems unwise to throw the stone with one hand while the other holds much less information about the players than it does. McClay & Company has earned the public’s trust and deserves the benefit of the doubt.
David Moore adds an extra twist, arguing that The Cowboys’ use of their capital project was an unqualified success.
What the Cowboys have done with the capital they have in this draft makes it an unqualified success.
Dallas added a file Pro Bowl Cornback and a A permanent 1,000 yard receiver With two fifth-round picks. The sixth round yielded a veteran run stopper. No other team can claim this.
The acquisitions of Stephon Gilmore and Brandin Cooks must be factored into this category’s valuation. The same goes for defensive tackle Jonathan Hankins, who was selected during last season’s sixth round pick in this draft.
Do that, and a team coming out 12-5 seasons in a row will look very different.
National pundits (and perhaps even some Cowboys fans) may not necessarily agree with the above; Their preliminary scores show the same wide range we’ve seen from draft coverage over the past couple of days, which just means there’s a try for every taste below.
Chad Reuter, NFL.com: Grade B+
Smith will be a tough guy to move on the inside and has the athletic strength to win by the gaps more consistently. Schoonmaker will fill the need to replace Dalton Schultz as a receiving/blocking tight end, while Overhown is in the mold of Jayron Kearse and should be a solid second-tier fullback.
Dallas sent fifth-round picks to Houston’s Brandin Cox (161) and Indianapolis’ cornerback Stephon Gilmour (176). They cast Fehoko as a loud snob who has the bulk to play inside of him in subpacks. Richards is a great pick for the Cowboys needing depth tackle. They gave up a 2024 fifth-round pick to tall Scott Athletic, who I thought might go earlier. Vaughn joins his father—a cowboy scout—in Dallas. It will provide depth and open field speed.
goalkeeper mile, ESPN: b grade
After another early playoff exit in a surprise attack late in the season, the Cowboys The coordinator was fired by Kellen Moore And Promoted by Brian Schottenheimer. Head coach Mike McCarthy will return call plays, as he did in Green Bay. With Dalton Schultz leaving free agency and running back, Dallas had holes in both positions heading into the draft, and thought they could both be tackled in the first couple of days.
But in the first round, the Cowboys went in a different direction, and I have no qualms about that. Mazie Smith (26) is the best running filler defensive tackle in this class, a 323-pounder who will instantly improve his run defense. Their D line last season was often blown away on the line of scrimmage, so adding an anchor like Smith would help the entire front seven. If you look at other NFC East teams, Dallas needed the buildup to stop the run.
I would load other tight ends on Luke Schoonmaker (58), but he has interesting traits. Tucker Kraft and Brenton Strange were available and top on my board. Schoonmaker will be turning 25 as a rookie, so the question is how much more space he should develop. DeMarvion Overshown (90) is one of analyst Louis Reddick’s favorites in this category; It can be as impressive as Blitzer.
Edge rusher Villiami Fihuko (129) has had 23 sacks over the past three seasons; I Highlight it as a possible sleeper in December. Running back Deuce Vaughn (212) is a great player in a 5-foot-5 package. I’d love to see him succeed in Dallas, which is where he’s been My dad is a scout.
There isn’t a lot of flash in this class, which isn’t usually how team owner Jerry Jones does things, but I can’t hit many of these selections. Dallas did well.
Nick Simon, Kings: b grade
Not an exciting draft for Jerry Jones and company, but the choices they made near the top could pay off right away. Smith and Overshown should provide solid depth to the Cowboys’ already strong front seven. As for the tight end, it was thought that they would use a first-rounder Our LadyMichael Meyer. Instead, they turned to another Michigan guy at Schoonmaker and gave tight end Dak Prescott a go, who should see some goals as a rookie. A solid for Dallas.
Finney Eyre, sports news: grade c
The Cowboys immediately reached Need with a 4-3 stuffing nose with Smith being tackled in the first round. Schoonmaker, Vaughn, and Brooks didn’t give them the offensive skills they needed. Overtaking is their kind of linebacker to complement Micah Parsons, and he and Smith have salvaged the lineup for immediate effect, as well as Huku’s own big defensive upswing.
Gilberto Manzano, Si.com: grade c
The Cowboys went missing with running guard Smith, but they could have gotten a more complete player in Brian Pressey, who then went with three draft picks to the Saints. Dallas reached out to Smith and waited so long to fill the tight spot left by Dalton Schultz. Schoonmaker is a versatile player, but Michael Mayer would have made a more immediate impact. Dallas added defensive depth with players Overhown and Fehoko.
Ryan Gosling, ProFootballNetwork: grade c
The Cowboys are known for their ability to build through NFL Draft. The confidence they have built over the years is partly why their scores are as high as they are. Although the class feels a bit uninspired, the Dallas scouts, especially on Day 3, managed to find the gem. But they will need Mazie Smith to be an early impact player to see significant results in this category.
Danny Kelly ringer: Class C-
The Cowboys were heavy in unmarked positions over the first two days of the draft, taking Michigan blocking nose Mazie Smith in the first round before adding tight end Luke Schoonmaker in the second, and off-ball linebacker DeMarvion Overhawn in the third. If Smith can unleash his cutting-edge athleticism and turn that into better pass rush production, that would provide a huge boost for the class — but if he’s crowned as a rotational player early on, the player’s influence is hard to find in the Dallas draft.
Chris Trapso in CBSSports Provides “choice-by-choice” scores for the third day:
129. William Fihoko, Grade: a
Advanced Rasher is strong and has a thick EDGE frame. Several years of high level productivity. The sport is a bit unsettling. I love the depth of the Dallas location here.
169. Asim Richards, Grade: B+
The undersized type and ingenuity of the OT. Usually a good handiwork. For his size, he’s working hard to grow his professional passing roots but has to get stronger at the first point of attack. Choosing depth wise for the Cowboys up front.
178. Eric Scott Jr Grade: C-
An explosive long linebacker who is the best as a line athlete. Rigidity emerges when changing directions. The Cowboys love to pick some fuzzy CBs at the right time. It was not firmly on the radar project.
212- Deuce Von, b grade
Darren Sproles Lite. Not explosive. But a similar frame is ultra-compact. He slides around the field. I can’t find him among the trees. The occasional highlight chorus music but not ridiculously far fetched. Useful in passing game. Great pass professional actors.
244. Galen Brooks, Grade: C-
Brooks is a bulky receiver who lacks top speed. It does a good job of smoothing its ways across the field, but it lacks explosiveness. Dallas adds more volume to the room. (Josh Edwards)
