Professional golfers put on the miles. Their cars, their planes – it’s a world tour these days, so they know more deft travel tricks than anyone else.
Colin Montgomery is no exception. The 31-time DP World Tour Champion and seven-time PGA Tour Champion has won more than 50 tournaments around the world. Even on the day he was interviewed for this story, for example, Monty had flown from London to New York City just the day before.
We caught up with Montgomery at the Berenberg Invitational and asked him for his best travel advice. If anyone knows, it is him.
He said, “If you know what you’re doing, and you’re early, send them across.” “fedex or those other generic terms no matter what you use, DHL or ship sticks. You just get rid of them, right? And that’s what happened. “
That way you don’t have to worry about them being towed, which is annoying, but also the airline will lose them, Montgomery said. (Side note: the author of this article dealt with that last summer, and clubs have been gone for over two months.)
The waiting game at the baggage claim center is not fun either.
“You can take your bag off the carousel. Well that’s good. Now, big, big, big. Where’s the big?” Montgomery said. “There. And then wait. Then every other element comes along and you don’t have your clubs. Everyone else stayed, and you stayed. It’s the loneliest place. So, No. 1, send the clubs forward, if you get the chance.”
As for a trip centered around Scotland?
“We always think of Scotland as a wonderful country, but we’ve never sold it because of the weather, unfortunately,” said Montgomery. “You never know what you’re going to get. Weather forecasters don’t know either.”
The key, he says, is to use thin layers.
“We used to have one big, warm thing to wear, but now it’s layering, so if it’s heated up, you can take one off, and it’s on as you go,” he said. “So, layers, I think this is very important.”
