Cody Staman plans to resume his loss to Douglas Silva de Andrade at UFC Charlotte.
In the first round with just under two minutes left, Staman was awarded a penalty kick and when he was on the floor, De Andrade took an illegal overtime kick. The referee then called time to make sure Stamann was okay, but rather than reset the position or take a point, the referee stopped them and de Andrade went on to win the first round.
Of course, with de Andrade winning the first round, he ended up winning the fight 29-28 on all three judges’ scorecards. Still, Stamann plans to appeal the loss because had he kept the number one spot, he feels like he would have won the first round and then won the fight.
“Obviously I know the rules and he knew he messed up too. Once that happened I looked at the ref to make sure he saw it and called the time. At this point I think it’s either a point or a warning and we’re back on the ground with me at the top, given I’ve got this attitude. “There were two minutes left on the clock as well, and then he stands up and says killer,” Staman told BJPENN.com.
“I’m standing there kind of protesting, I’m like what f**k you do, if you stand up, you gotta take a point. I’m confused, but in front of me is Douglas trying to kill me,” Staman continued. “I can’t call a time out, so it’s one of those situations I just had to get through right away. He was basically rewarded for doing something illegal by standing up. What’s to stop someone kicking someone off the bottom if they can’t get up and they They know now that they’re going to stand up and take no point? You can’t give someone an advantage if they do something illegal.”
As of now, Cody Staman’s appeal has not been officially released but he and his manager are writing papers and will be sending them to North Carolina Athletic Commission almost.
However, Stamann is well aware of the appeal date, so he says he won’t appeal the loss due to poor judgment, even if he thinks he was robbed. Instead, he appeals a huge refereeing error that he believes played a role in his loss, which is why he is confident the fight will end in a “no contest”.
“Before I left, I needed to speak to someone from the Commission because they stole this from me. Everyone in the UFC was very supportive and got the Chief Sports Commissioner to come and talk to me,” Staman said. “She went through my options, showed me the rules and what I could appeal. I read the rules and this is literally what happens in my fight. Honestly, I feel pretty confident this will turn out to be a no contest or lottery. But the rules are as clear as day. There is no gray area, and you can’t give someone an advantage for doing something illegal.”
Currently, Stamann isn’t sure how long the appeal will take, but he says everyone in the UFC has been happy with his performance and told him he was screwed up by the referee.
