Former Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman will make his long-awaited comeback from a bad leg break at UFC 292 later this summer.
Weidman (15-6) is expected to face Brad Tavares (19-8) at a pay-per-view event on August 19, 2023 at TD Garden in Boston. Newsday He was the first to report on the match.
Weidman has not been seen in action since breaking his leg while kicking Uriah Hall in an April 2021 bout. “The All-American” immediately struck an eerily similar scene of middleweight legend Anderson Silva breaking his leg against Weidman in their second fight.
Weidman captured the UFC Middleweight Championship against Silva in 2013, and held the title until it was ended by Luke Rockhold in 2015. Since then, the New York native has accumulated a 2-5 record, including an unsuccessful move up to light heavyweight in 2019 vs. Dominic Reyes.
Chris Weidman will be greeted back to the Boston Octagon by Hawaii’s Brad Tavares, who will come into the game after losing back-to-back matches to Bruno Silva and Dricos du Plessis.
Neither fighter is currently ranked in the promotional weight class of 185 pounds, which is again dominated by Israel Adesanya.
UFC 292 is set to headline a pair of title fights, as Aljamain Sterling puts his 135-pound title on the line against Sean O’Malley, while women’s strawweight champion Weili Zhang battles with Amanda Lemos.
To date, the following matches have been reported for the card:
Aljamen Sterling (C) vs Sean O’Malley – For the UFC bantamweight championship
Zhang Weili (centre) vs Amanda Lemos – Women’s Strawweight Championship
Chris Weidman vs. Brad Tavares
