Homecoming Canelo Alvarez is on.
Canelo Alvarez pulled the plug on Friday for his undisputed title defense against John Ryder, which will take place Saturday at Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico. This is Canelo’s first fight in his home country since November 2011.
Champion came in at 167.5 pounds, while Ryder weighed in slightly less at 168 pounds.
Among the main events taking place on Saturday are WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO and Canelo’s WBO. the ring The super middleweight titles.
Canelo (58-2-2, 39 KOs) is coming off a unanimous decision win over rival Gennady Golovkin last September. With this win, Canelo rebounded from a decision loss to Dmitry Bivol that cost him the WBA light heavyweight title. He has won nine of his past ten matches.
This is Ryder’s second chance at super middleweight gold after previously challenging Callum Smith for the WBA title in November 2019. He lost to Smith by unanimous decision, but bounced back with four straight wins to become the interim WBO champion and mandatory contender.
