One of the biggest transfer names in college basketball is back on the market. Sources told CBS Sports that former North Carolina guard Caleb Love will not play for Michigan next season after initially vowing to join the Wolverines.
Sources told CBS Sports that Love did not have enough transferable credits to easily clear the admissions bar at Michigan. He did have a track to record, but it would have required a very heavy load in the spring and summer, one source added.
The news of Love’s commitment cancellation from the Wolverines was first reported by 247Sports’ Eric Bossi. A source told CBS Sports that a return to play for North Carolina is not on the table.
Love, who rose to stardom in the past two seasons at North Carolina State, is a rising senior. He announced his commitment to Michigan on April 7, but will instead remain in the transfer gate. After a rocky, rocky season, Love reached 17th place David Kopp transfer ratings.
While at UNC, Love started 96 games. His play during the 2022 NCAA Tournament helped catapult No. 8 seed North Carolina all the way to the national championship game. High point: Love’s shot on Duke’s Mark Williams in the final seconds of the Final Four. The game ended Mike Krzyzewski’s Hall of Fame career, and Love’s 3-pointer became a defining moment in UNC history.
A former five-star prospect, Love had 14.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists on 36.0% shooting and 31.7% from 3-point range in his career. He has talent but he was inconsistent. His size, stroke and ability to get to the edge as a 6-foot-4 shooting guard made him, at one point, considered a NBA Prospect.
His star has dimmed a bit, but he is still seen as a player with huge potential. Now that Love is back on the market, it’s going to be in high demand on the high key. This 2023 Phase 2 recruit is sure to become the most tracked move of college basketball players in the coming weeks.
