It may be hard to admit, Brooks Koepka isn’t too proud to admit he “choked” at the Masters last month.
Koepka first used the word during the Barstool Sports podcast, where he said his motivation was to beat the hosts to the punch by saying he choked before they had a chance.
Two-time PGA Champion (2018, ’19) and US Open winner (2017, ’18) are four shots at the Masters as a weather-delayed third round restart and up by two in the fourth round opener. Koepka then proceeded to shoot 3-over-75 in the loss to John Rahm and finished tied for second with compatriot LIV Golf Phil Mickelson.
As for whether he thinks the word “choke” applies, Koepka didn’t hesitate Wednesday.
“In theory, yeah, he’s choking, right? If you have bullets and you cough him up, he’s choking,” Koepka said, noting that he had not slept that Sunday night as he contemplated what had happened.
His time for reflection is long over, he added, noting that three of his major wins came when he drove through 54 holes.
“I don’t dwell on it,” Koepka said. “I can’t do it every time. I’m not perfect. As long as I can learn from him, I’ll be better off than him.”
