Washington Capitals star Niklas Backstrom awarded his annual scholarship award in his native Sweden on Wednesday. Backstrom has been awarded his scholarship every year since 2010.
Prizes go to ninth graders Sovidal School who excelled in both sports and the classroom. Scholarship recipients are selected by the school’s physical education teachers.
The award was presented at the facilities of Valbo HC, Backstrom’s former youth hockey organization. Valbo HC plays all of their home games at Neckpack Arenawhich is named after Backstrom, who hypothesised Arena care on August 28, 2011. NickBack Arena is also the site of the annual Nicklas Backström Cup tournament, which takes place every summer for under-16 hockey players in the Gävle region.
Backstrom was a steadfast supporter of hockey and the school in his home country. he Donate the entire bonus check which he received from Team Sweden for winning the goal medal at the 2017 World Championships (more here) to Valpo Hockey Club.
Valbo HC is located in Valbo, Sweden, about 5 miles southwest of Backstrom’s hometown of Gavle, Sweden. Falbo plays in Swedish Division 2, the fourth level of ice hockey in Sweden. Backstrom began his ice hockey career at Valbo AIF, now known as Valbo HC.
