Irresponsible rumour
Per Rick DhaliwalThe Vancouver Canucks continued their interest in Alexis Lafrenière. Lafreniere trade rumors will be numerous this season for the Rangers, as the rhetoric surrounding the former first overall pick has been so negative after another season that failed to meet fans’ expectations and didn’t make it to the playoffs.
To be fair to Lafreniere, most of the Rangers didn’t appear in the playoffs, and his season was just a “negative” for fans. He put up career highs in assists and points while receiving mostly third line time and minimal playing time. The fact that Lafreniere was somewhat celebrated for getting his first Powerplay goal at the end of his third season says a lot about his use.
The Lafreniere trade rumors aren’t going away anytime soon. Lafreniere’s on-ice issues, particularly its skiing, are a major factor in this. But it will be difficult for the Rangers to match his production for the expected $2.5 million bridge deal Lafreniere is set to receive. It’s hard to find 15-20 targets and 35-40 points at the same power with only 15 minutes on average.
The Vancouver connection is unsurprising, since Lafreniere’s former agent, Emilie Castonguay, is the assistant GM.
