The scheduled five-round bout didn’t go the full distance. Volkanovski secured the win by TKO after delivering a right knee followed by a pair of uppercuts to the body and head, then immediately knocked out Rodriguez and finished him off with quick punches. The referee called him the day after 4 minutes 19 seconds into the third round.
With the win, Aleksander Volkanovski improved to 26-2 and made his fifth successful title defense. The 34-year-old Sydney international has also recovered from defeat in his previous match in February in Perth, failing in his bid to claim the lightweight belt against Islam Makhachev and becoming the king of the two-legged AFC Champions League.
Yair Rodriguez fell to 16-4, which snapped his two-time winning streak. Barral, the 30-year-old chihuahua, who earned the interim bar by submitting in round two against Josh Emmett also at UFC 284 in Perth, failed in his attempt to land the undisputed crown.
