Alabama deputy athletic director Matt Self was arrested Sunday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and charged with third-degree domestic violence, According to multiple reports. The Tuscaloosa Police Department was called just after midnight Sunday morning and Self was arrested after an investigation, according to BamaOnLine.
Self, in charge of the Crimson Tide football program, was placed on a 24-hour domestic violence bond on $300 bail. He was not listed in the prisoner database Monday afternoon, BamaOnLine reported.
“Alabama Athletics are aware of this incident,” a University of Alabama spokesperson said in a statement. “We take matters like this very seriously and will continue to gather more information to address this personnel issue.”
AL.com reports that Self had previously been arrested in Tuscaloosa in 2010. He pleaded guilty to one count of DUI violation, paid a fine and received a suspended 10-day jail sentence. He was working at the University of Alabama at the time.
The Alabama athletics website states that Self leads the Athletics Compliance Office, and is “responsible for all areas of compliance with NCAA, SEC, and UA rules and regulations.” He also oversees equipment operations, sports medicine, nutrition, and strength and conditioning and is responsible for soccer and volleyball. He also works directly with the UA Counsel’s Office, the UA President’s Office, the UA Systems Office, and the External Counsel to assist with contract and legislative matters.
She graduated herself from the University of Alabama School of Law in 2004 and headed into private practice. He joined the Alabama Athletics Office of Compliance in 2008, initially serving as the football’s primary compliance contact. He was promoted to lead the compliance department in 2016.
He was named director of football in May 2021 after Jeff Burton left to become the athletic director of Arkansas State. Self works under Alabama Athletic Director Greg Byrne, who has held his position since 2017 following a stint as Arizona State athletic director.
