two games. That’s all we’ll see about Victor Wimpanyama in the Summer League. According to Mike Finger of the San Antonio Express-News San Antonio Spurs will close out the top pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
Wenger wrote on Twitter: “Is it reported that Victor Wimbanyama is now 100% finished with the Summer League at Tottenham?” “All along, the plan was two games. The Spurs wanted a taste of the NBA, and they got it. The team saw what they wanted to see, and now give it a break after a busy 12 months.”
Wimpanyama gave fans mixed performances during both outings of the Summer League.
The highly touted prospect has shown huge upside as an edge protector and shot blocker. Mbaniyama also flashed many scoring skills. However, the Tottenham debutant also seemed to struggle with the physicality of play and often looked a little too small when trying to work the post.
In fact, Wimpanyama played two strong matches. However, the media hype and fan expectations raised the bar to an unrealistic level. We have to accept that Wimpanyama is not LeBron James. You don’t have to be athletically gifted when you’re 7-foot-3 with a three-level scoring, tight dribbling and excellent work ethic.
Tottenham will need to give Wimpanyama time. Fans will need to give Wimpanyama times. Most of all, Wimpanyama will need to give himself time. San Antonio will likely get their newest recruit into the weight room over the summer as they look to improve his core strength and durability. Coming from Ligue 1 will ensure Wimpanyama is in a difficult adjustment period.
San Antonio still has potential generational talent on their hands; He doesn’t come prepared like James once did. Everyone’s journey is different. And if we’ve learned anything from Wembanyama’s first two matches, it’s that his journey is going to be a one-hit.
