It’s the right time to be a professional golfer.
In the midst of a season when more money is available for grabs than ever before, the major leagues have continued to up the financial stakes in a race to keep up with the bloated purses now available at PGA Tour events, which feature total payouts more than double what they were a year ago.
The Masters Championship and the PGA Championship have increased their purses to record levels this year, offering $18 million and $17.5 million, respectively.
But the US Open has really upped the ante for Los Angeles Country Club, unveiling a total purse of $20 million (up $2.5 million from last year), with $3.6 million going to the winner on Sunday. In fact, the top three finishers will each take home seven figures, with the runner-up taking home $2.16 million and the third place taking home $1,413,430. Even the fourth-place finisher will take home nearly $1 million, with a payout of $990,867.
The USGA’s generosity also extends to the 76 players who missed Friday’s cut, who will each receive $10,000 for their efforts.
Despite the staggering amounts available for taking in, it’s important to note that the US Open isn’t even the richest tournament on the PGA Tour schedule. This classification belongs to The Players Championship, which distributes a purse of $25 million, with $4.5 million awarded to the winner.
There is clearly a lot to play for in LA this weekend. You can check out the full 2023 US Open dividend distribution below.
