Aspray Glasgow West sponsored Glasgow Clan picked up a big two points in the push for the play-offs, but they didn’t have all their way in the face of a late Dundee fightback.
Clan started well, firing in goals, full of energy and not letting up as the Dundee Stars, while looked dangerous going forward, struggled to find a way past on-form goalie Antti Karjalainen.
Mike Pelech opened the scoring after the first minute when he took on a Philippe Sanche pass and buried it past Dundee netminder Lucas Brine.
After a terrific save by Karjalainen to deny Brendan Harms, the home side doubled their lead as Gary Haden made a move down the inside right, drifted inside and send a low effort past Brine’s left hand.
Soon it was three as Charlie Combs combined with Jake Bolton, who fired his shot home from the centre and the Clan were hungry for more.
After Ryan Valentini was denied by an point blank save from Karjalainen, Matt Barry got involved with a wrist shot that fizzed into the net.
It was a dream opening period for Jason Morgan’s side and it got better early in the second as Sanche moved up the left, dragged the puck inside and slammed in a fifth.
Anthony Rinaldi pulled one back for the Stars with a slick move just seconds after the Clan had successfully killed a penalty.
But they were enjoying the taste for goals again as Barry moved it forward into the Dundee zone, playing the puck behind Luke Lynch and finding Combs, who needed no invitation to add to the tally.
Then captain Dyson Stevenson, back after a layoff through injury, smashed in a one-timer after being set up by Robert Lachowicz.
The lead was a comfortable one for the Clan as they moved into the third period, but Dundee, to their credit, didn’t let up as they continued to make life difficult for their opponents when they could.
The away fans had something to celebrate when Elijah Vilio got their second, getting some reward for the spell of pressure they enjoyed immediately before.
Then a rocket of a shot from Spencer Naas flew into the roof of the Clan net as Stars made inroads on what was a healthy Glasgow lead.
Chris McKay narrowed it even more with four to play as the home fans began to feel a little tense in the face of a momentum swing, followed by a Drydn Dow backhand effort that beat Karjalainen for Stars’ fifth.
A late goal from Lachowicz with an empty net finish eased the nerves in the final seconds as Clan eventually got over the line.
